How to add a blog badge in WordPress.com

September 4, 2009

Everyone can tell you how to add a blog badge (aka button) in Blogger. It’s harder to do in WordPress because they don’t allow the textarea tag. But they do provide their own proprietary way of displaying what you want.

GrudgeMom.wordpress.com

<a href="https://grudgemom.wordpress.com" target="_blank"><img src="https://grudgemom.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/button.jpg" alt="GrudgeMom.wordpress.com"></a>

Now how did I do that? WordPress has this fancy code tag [ sourcecode language='html' ] [ /sourcecode ] (without the spaces around the [ and ]) that you can use to display your html as html, without it being stripped. It also comes with a handy “Copy to Clipboard” link and “View Plain” which opens the html in another window as plain text. VERY handy!

No need to use the textarea tag at all for your badge. Just the link, image and end link.

If you can’t get it to work, let me know and I’ll see if I can help.

Edited to add an image of my current code as a sample, in a format that WordPress can’t render!

  1. Thanks for posting this! I will definitely make a button for my blog once I move to WP and buy my domain.

  2. Thank you SO much! I am not technical, but your instructions made it clear enough so that I could figure it out and I was able to post a badge on my blog. YAY!!!

    Thanks again.

  3. Thank you for posting the info about the button — although I’m still trying to make sense of it..I’m sure it will all come together soon. Do you still design blog headers and such? I’m finally ready to start mine and I have it drawn out with colored pencils and all — but need your professional touch. I was ready “There’s no snakes in New Zealand” and saw you were recommended. (Love NZ and enjoyed my visit there). Would love to hear from you.

  4. If you see badges on my blog, you’ll know I applied your instructions well.

    Thanks

  5. Thank you thank you thank you. You saved many chunks of hair from being pulled.
