Dilute Bleach Baths for Eczema

May 18, 2009

Bacteria on the skin may make eczema worse and lead to infection. This simple formula makes for an anti‐bacterial bath that is even gentler than a swimming pool and usually does not sting even when there is some open skin.

1. Fill a bathtub with warm (not hot!) water (about 40 gallons).

2. Pour 1/4 to 1/2 cup of common liquid bleach into the water.

3. Completely mix the added bleach in the water.

4. Soak in the chlorinated water for about 10 minutes.

5. Rinse the skin well with warm, fresh water at the end of each bath. You may use a gentle cleanser as well.

6. Gently pat the skin dry.

7. Apply the prescription creams or ointments or the moisturizer as directed while the skin is moist.

8. Repeat bleach baths 3 to 5 times per week or as prescribed by your doctor.

  1. i used to do this before i got pregnant and it worked. during my pregnancy my eczema really inflamed now that i have given birth i want to resume these baths to clear up but i am breastfeeding. can i still do this without harm to my infant?

  2. Hi Melissa,

I honestly don’t know if you can do bleach baths while breastfeeding. There’s a link at the bottom of the post from where I got the information, Eczema Institute or somesuch place like that. I will see if I can get an answer from someone there and post it back on here.

  3. I have heard back from Peter at the Eczema Care and Education Centre about breastfeeding and bleach baths.

“As for breast feeding, so long as the breast is thoroughly rinsed after the soak with clear water, I don’t see any reason for concern. There should be essentially no residual bleach on the skin at that point and breastfeeding should be okay.”

He did point out that the bleach used in a bleach bath is less than the chlorine in a public swimming pool. So for anyone wondering about bleach baths during pregnancy, you’re probably okay.

  4. De verdad que estaba buscando esto, la verdad que es bueno conseguir informaciones de este tipo, ahora mismo iniciaré un proyecto que se relaciona bastante con esto.
